It was dying of natural causes when he bought it. Elon just held a pillow over its face to speed things up.

If you ever needed proof that people/companies worth lots of money didn’t earn it, you can look at twitter as a great example. He pretty much did everything wrong. Massively overpaid for it, lowered the companies valuation significantly, lost a lot of users, advertisers etc.

Somehow it still exists and is relavent and hadn’t hurt musks wealth.

Twitter used to be a very effective tool for spreading information (good or bad). It was often used by people protesting against their governments to organize gatherings, events and all sorts of stuff.

Then coincidentally when the USA desperately needs something like that, it is no longer around.

Twitter is isn’t even an open platform anymore since Musk took over, which completely defeats the purpose of this application—if you need an account to see content, it’s hard to say that it’s still a platform for public statements, since the content simply isn’t publicly available.

        hadn’t hurt musks wealth.

He’s lost billions, I’m not sure what gave you that idea.

And I’ve noticed X being referenced in news articles etc far less than it used to be, and Bluesky being referenced far more. The platform has definitely lost relevance.

I think it’s kinda funny walking back and forth between left-wing and right-wing spaces because depending on where you are, the world is in vastly different places according to both.

Something like Twitter has never done better and bluesky is on its way out according to right-wing spaces. Meanwhile here, people are talking about how Twitter is dead and bluesky is on the rise.

I can’t confirm or deny either because I refuse to use either service, but I do find it both amusing and a little concerning just how far apart from each other these two camps are when it comes to having a read on what’s happening in the world.

The whole concept is a proven failure. People just don’t have that many insightful things to say.

Twitter is going to give us full Dead Internet theory. The only real humans left on there see all the bots and can’t tell them apart because the people are idiots in the first place.

That being said, Bluesky seems to be 30% bots when I rarely get on it, and maybe I’m just not seeing the daily active users, but my spouse just stopped checking it because nothing punching her cortisol button was happening there.

Tbh, Dead Internet Theory applies almost everywhere.

Lemmy might just be far too small for it to work here. (For comparison, measured by activity and monthly active users, Lemmy is smaller than both the Linus Tech Tips form and the Crackberry forum.)

This is a confusing meme, because in the skit the parrot is dead when bought. It had been nailed to its perch to make it look alive and the seller told a series of funny lies. The bulk of the joke is how unreliable the pet shop clerk is.

In contrast, Twitter was obviously in bad shape (that’s why Musk was making a buy offer in the first place), the board was not interested in selling until he made a wildly over-value offer, and Musk immediately tried to back out of the sale and had to be forced to comply with the deal he’d made.
