I read a news story about a guy who died from rabies after receiving a kidney transplant. Although nobody was aware when he died, the donor of the kidney had contracted rabies after being scratched by a skunk several weeks before he died and his organs were harvested.
I got curious about how the donor got scratched by the skunk, but instead only found this article from August, which informed me that the U.S. has a rabies outbreak, and has more deaths from rabies in the last year than several previous years…
Not sure if people were already talking about this outbreak, and I just missed it? It’s been a bit of a weird year, and there’s been a lot of crazy shit to keep up with.
Anyway, this is also how I ended up reading the sentence informing me some people are worried dogs are getting autism from vaccines.
Outbreaks of rabies seem to be rising across the U.S., CDC surveillance shows
vaccinate your dog, everyone
People that dumb should have neither dogs nor kids.
They can vote though…
That is part of the problem, yes.
Or instead of raising the voting question (also known as non-democracy, only-whites-can-vote etc), maybe better agree on the importance of accessible education. Such as, a well funded school system, free or cheap non-corporate universities etc.
Yeah that all would be great but people are uneducated -> regressive populists get voted in -> cut education because rhey want people dumb to vote for them -> repeat cycle.
but people are uneducated
So you’re not? OK, as you say.
I’m not subscribing to such statements, personally. I see varying levels of education around, and I see my job as educating when I can, learning when I can.
So you’re not? OK, as you say.
May to mischaracterise. I never claimed anything about myself. Bu I do know one thing. I would not vote for people who campaign on reducing education access.
My main point was the negative feedback loop. If you have enough people uneducated to get into power people who slash education budgets, it makes it very hard to restore those and make education more accessible.
Fully agree on this one 🤝
The feedback loop is real and powerful
Purposely misreading someone else’s comment is not the way to proclaim you’re among the educated…
I’m not. As I said, I think people have varying degrees of education. I’m not separating between “us” and “them” in terms of education. I don’t make generalised statements of what happens on a global scale without good research into the subject either.
But simple things such as “we need to make education a social priority” is within my reach.
I get his meaning. I don’t see how you don’t just because he forgot one word.
So pedantic.
some people own dogs and cat as a prop or accesory to thier lifestyle, and when they get to a pet groomer, they get ratchety when they are told they arnt taking care of thier pets(something simple that can be done at home), often times its rich people and upper middle class
skunks actually have a higher rate outside of dogs of being infected by rabies, only thing that matches that is BATS and raccoons. possum has the lowest chances, due to them being a marsupial and a lower body temp, and different physiology
Why is my country so stupid?
some people didn’t like anyone who knew more than they did … The way things were going, if [they] wanted to throw stones at anyone who knew more than them, they’d soon have to throw them at the pigs
Terry Pratchett, Wintersmith
Capitalism.
Socioeconomic circumstances. And failures therein.
Who could have tought that saving on education to
get back to the good old timesraise your slave class, would have the unintended side-effect of dismembering the country they love so much. There times when I see obvious disinformation attacking America, and I will immediately stand up for my country and call out the bullshit.
Then I see something like this, and it leaves me feeling like I just stood up for a family member I felt was being unfairly picked on, who in response immediately decided to shit his pants and light a cigarette while filling up his car with gas.

I never thought I’d see the day where someone accurately described my outlook. Thanks, I hate it

I want to meet an autistic dog.
Mine demands a stable routine, sometimes makes a ton of noise, only to retreat if anything else makes similar noise, is super smart, but forgetful. Very sensitive to emotions. Overall a lovely dog, but this might get her a diagnosis. (Not a professional, just have a dog)
That’s actually pretty wise, what if your then autistic dog outsmarts you now thanks to their autism? /s
Listen Doc, yesterday I tried to get my dog to drink some whiskey and get on the roof with an aluminum baseball bat during a lightening storm, so we could go Back to the Future, but he just kept running away. Clearly, whatever was in that vaccine you gave him has made him autistic.
37 percent of Americans are irredeemably stupid. I see that number over and over for the stupidest shit.
lol weird: 37% rule / optimal stopping problem
that doesn’t seem related but it sure is interesting that it’s the same number
yeah, you’re right. I just remembered the 37% thing and felt compelled to share.
37 is also a common number used by “magicians” to when they try to guess the “random number” you’re thinking of because for some reason related to psychology, we think it is “more random” than other numbers between 1 and 100, on average. I don’t have the energy to cite this one right now tho lol
Here’s a great exposition on 37.
it is a very random number. it’s also a very large small number.
I was just going to say that. I think in every country 36 or 37% will just believe random crazy shit and/or be fucking with the poll taker.
But not in every country are the majority of the lawmakers from that sample size.
I-can dogs even be autistic?
Of course, it’s a cognitive spectrum that probably effects all mammals at least, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s far more prevalent than that
Children from international adoptions sometimes have something like an acquired autism - life is completely regulated and food and water and needed items are delivered and removed on schedules and the child has no impact on their environment. I had a couple of greyhounds that were trained to race as pups. They had some AU tendencies. I bet some other pups develop those to.
Uh, why not?
Let me go ask my dog if they’re autistic. They’re right over here, screaming about how it’s already 5:31 and I haven’t given them their 5:30 treat yet.
That’s a question that is very hard to answer. Dogs have a similar-ish brain structure but there’s a good chance you need a massive prefrontal cortex to have a chance of getting autism.
Honestly I think my dog might be. Very particular. Likes routine. Has sensory related triggers. Always finds the dark secluded corner of things get noisy in the house.
That’s a normal dog thing
That’s the joke
Dogs are great, but even if they were autistic would anyone even notice?
Yes, except just like human children, they are often just treated as difficult or badly behaved by adults who do not understand that they are autistic.
Genuinely what the fuck do they think a dog being autistic would look like
I imagine most golden retrievers I’ve just are a little autistic. It’s why they are so dopey.
I mean, dogs and cats can have mental illnesses or disorders, it’s just that they tend to be less impactful due to them being, well, pets. They have no responsibilities
From what I know, they can have traits reminiscent of human autism
Hell, with some dogs I’ve met, I would argue most dogs are autistic already😅

Love me some capy blapies! Truly the coolest rodent of all time. Except for my friend’s pet rats, those guys are the coolest if not a little too pee happy.
I had a cat that was clearly autistic.
I think that might be the default mode for cats.
What, how? They are very loving and emotional. The autistic people ive met are very intellectual and not very emotional… Very much living in their heads. But I have only met like… 3…or something. :)
But yeah, with my experience, I wouldnt put autistic people in the deep compassionate loving category. Maybe im wrong.
Just cause we don’t show it outwardly as often, doesn’t mean we autists aren’t very emotional. I think more so than most non autistic people. Remember it is a spectrum. For example I’m like gigantic and fairly well built (think Jason Witten but shaved head) and I’ll surprise (scare) some dates because I’m not afraid to cry on occasion. But it also may be my upbringing more than my diagnosis.
I need to meet more of you guys in my life. :)
We’re generally not “not very emotional” we just show it differently and less. But it could seem so if you can’t decipher the differentness.
Yeah another guy here said the same. Thank you!
As with any statistic, 25-35% of people are completely brain dead or horrible people.
Didn’t foresee this as a consequence to the rise of the antivax conspiracy. Sure I knew we’d be in trouble to reach herd immunity for the next epidemic/pandemic, but now we have to worry about rabbies in pets too. And what’s next? Antivax farmers refusing to vaccinate their cattle?
They fear autism from vaccines so much that they became retarded instead.
I feel for the dogs, but we’re better off if those people died from preventable disease. so let them make their choices
Regardless of how bizarre this is the implied message is “I’d rather see my kid die of a virus than have any autism.”
I think it’s that attitude with any neurodivergence or mental health related issue. You know, all the things that
doctors didn’t know about diagnosing“just didn’t exist” in the past.Like we saw the consequences of people struggling through life, not getting a diagnosis, and not understanding why life was so challenging. For example, my dad was dyslexic and my mom very likely had ADHD, but neither was ever diagnosed.
They just struggled constantly through school, had terrible self esteem, and when somebody told them to just give up and choose a different career path they just said ok, guess I’m just not cut out for this.
Then I got both, and my parents were ok with acknowledging the dyslexia bc it was pretty easy to diagnose.
The ADHD was a whole other story, and I was told by my own parents (who were tough on me because they just didn’t want me ending up like them) and most of my teachers, that I was just careless and lazy over and over. I started hating school when I was like 8, and barely even finished high school. When I got to college by the skin of my teeth, I found stuff that actually interested me, but I still struggled so much through college and grad school. For a very long time, I believed the reason everything was so so much harder for me than my peers was bc I was just dumb/not cut out for it.
I had to wait until I was in my 30s and had my own real job and insurance to even attempt to seek help and get an ADHD diagnosis, and even then it took a very long time, but I’m so glad I finally did it.
Maybe if we can keep society from further devolving, in a few generations we can also get people to understand that acknowledging neurodivergence and mental health in kids means isn’t weakness and doesn’t mean you have to accept some kind of dangerous magical sorcery. It just means understanding that people often thrive when you allow them to just be themselves, and treat them like individuals with their own strengths, weaknesses, and unique skills.
Roughly corresponding to the bottom third of the IQ spectrum, with an assortment of “below average” folks thrown in for good measure.
