I’ve listened to Mélenchon when he came to Montreal, and I’ve listened to a few of his discours online afterwards. I did not hear any of the things you’re describing. I also don’t trust the accusations you’re making because it’s exactly the kind of shit neoliberal centrists have been accusing the Left of since the Iraq War, all the while actually doing all of the same things in practice. So I’m giving LFI the benefit of the doubt in general and I’m disappointed about this in particular.
Jean-Luc Mélenchon is not a stupid man. He is never going to say something completely illegal. He uses dogwhisles. And you only those dogwhisles if you are fully paying attention.

The Omar Mosque

This is considered one of the most extreme mosque in France.
In fact, the Omar Mosque had this reputation for decades
Mélenchon doesn’t give a fuck. He made a tweet that spread like wildfire about the evil police humiliating muslims. He gains votes.

He publically accused journalist Ruth El Krief of insulting Islam/Muslims
You can criticize Ruth El Krief on a lot of things. And that’s fine. But she never insulted Islam or Muslims. Never.
Jean-Luc Mélenchon knows that. He posted this message accusing her of insulting Islam right in the beginning of the Gaza crisis. While a lot of muslims are shocked and horrified.
By publically accusing a Jewish figure of disrespecting Islam, he can appear as “the defender” of humiliated muslims. He gains many votes.
Because of his tweet, El Krief received thousands of messages threatening to cut her throat. She now lives under police protection:
