I hate the pay for ad-free subscription model. They use people’s personal data to optimize the experience, making their ads as annoying and disorienting as possible.
When Reddit first unveiled their subscription, they began spamming my phone with obnoxious herpes advertisements. The ad just said “Herpes?” in big purple letters. Since this particular subject invoked a sense of fear and anxiety, it made me more likely to pay for their removal.
I feel as though people in 3rd world countries will be hit the hardest. Most of the jobs in first world countries can already be done much, much cheaper by foreign workers. Although we could outsource everything, it feels like we give people jobs just to keep people busy.
In the next two decades, I’m convinced that the countries that can’t afford to invest in AI and automation will be hit the hardest. The value of their work will be reduced, and richer nations will not freely share the technology.
…it was my point about world hunger. Things are set up to where the global poor have just enough money to by food and shelter. Their low wages are why people in my country have such a high standard of living.
If you look at the raw materials used by society-the oil, wood, water, metal, etc.-it is overwhelmingly used by the majority. The rich people have more resources than the average poor person, but it’s still a small fraction of the existing physical resources.
If we were to take all their stuff and divide it evenly amongst everyone, it wouldn’t necessarily solve our problems. It would be a moral victory. They would become poor and we would become a percent or two less poor.
