  • Yes, as soon as 99%+ of the users aren’t on the same server. That’s the bottom line. We can argue theory all day but it doesn’t change the implications of centralization.

Over the last few weeks hundreds of people have moved their accounts to the new blacksky.app PDS, and they’re running an early version of their app at blacksky.community

I’ve spent…quite a bit of time intentionally looking for alternative ATP servers and this is the first time I’ve heard of this. And I’m balls deep in this stuff. I even run my own AP server. So I’d say it’s so obscure as to be meaningless.

99.99% of the users are still on infrastructure run by Bluesky PBC…but looking at all the progress and activity, it sure seems to me that’s in the process of changing.

My guy. LOL. No. Just no. It isn’t.

so many people in the Fediverse present the fact that 99.99% of Bluesky users are still using infrastructrure run by Bluesky PBC as if it’s a gotcha

    I mean…yeah? It is.

They just prefer to invest their time and energy in working to improve the situation

And we prefer to invest our time and energy into supporting an actually decentralized protocol.

rather than arguing about the semantics of “decentralization.”

At what point was anyone arguing semantics?

So can we please stop arguing about this already?

    Yes, please, go ahead.

  • I had no idea. Just like you don’t know what AirPlay is.

When I didn’t know, I looked it up

You seem to have forgotten about the steaming device/box similar to the AppleTV; one that doesn’t have ads on the home screen.

Take any Google TV box and install a different launcher. Boom. Ads gone.

I’m asking for a computer. Not a Chromebook or tablet.

I dont know what you think a computer is, but they are.

  • Does Google have an audio only streaming protocol that’s in third party devices?

    …you mean Bluetooth?

A home streamer without ads on the Home Screen?

    What is a “home streamer”?

    A first party watch?

LOL, yes, but that’s not actually do anything, that’s just existing.

A computer that isn’t a web browser running on low powered hardware?

Once again, yes, but also not something you do, just existing.

  • People are arguing because ATProto is not open. And that couldn’t be more clear in the simple fact that BSky hosts tens of millions of users, 99.95% of “the ATmosphere”. While AP has <1% of the number of users and yet they’re strewn across tens of thousands of servers.

We’ve already seen the implications of such closure in the silencing of users by foreign govts, silencing of users in an entire state, and enforcement of draconian ID laws on millions of users in the EU. Meanwhile AP is largely unaffected.

And BSky is still taking the Silicon Valley approach of “we’ll figure out how to make money later”, to which the answers are the same as every other social platform. They’re not funded by donations, they’re funded by investments from investors who expect to see a profit eventually.
