Depends on the handset, but you can silence Work Profile or even temporarily disable it altogether. Also, WP prevents BYOD apps from having any access to personal apps and data. Also, for the business, it allows them to enforce isloation policies (so you can’t copy from work Outlook into personal GMail, for example) and means that if the phone needs to be wiped it only affect the WP partition.

I’ve run IT for a number of SMEs and I always insist that BYOD devices have to have a separate work profile that can be switched off at will or on a schedule. It’s better for the company and the user. I can’t understand why anyone would do it differently.
I think Gopher would be an even more unworkable shit show than HTTP/HTML is it had to deal with the last thirty year of changes.
Now, Teletext on the other hand…

rmuk@feddit.ukto Steam Deck@sopuli.xyz•Gaming handheld prices are out of control, except for the Steam DeckEnglish2·15 days agoWe had a bunch of laptops at work with ARC GPUs in them. The vendor supplied one of them as test units saying they were ideal as portable 8K video editing machines, to which I replied - in exactly these words - “oh, fuck off”. But then we tested them and they’re honestly excellent and run a lot cooIer and longer than the AMD/Intel+Nvidia equivalents. I had to apologise. I got to test the Claw side-by-side with the Steam Deck playing RDR2 and Forza Horizon 5 and that sealed the deal. And when the ARC GPU does start groaning then, like I said, it’s eGPU time. The ARC is probably never going to bother the top-tier GPUs from AMD and Nvidia, but for portable and, I dare say, midrange desktop gaming it’s ideal.

rmuk@feddit.ukto Steam Deck@sopuli.xyz•Gaming handheld prices are out of control, except for the Steam DeckEnglish21·15 days agoI completely agree. I passed over the Steam Deck and went for the MSI Claw 8 instead. I was willing to pay the extra for a waaaay better CPU/GPU combo and - the killer feature IMHO - not one, but two Thunderbolt ports. Long term, this means I can expect a longer life out of my MSI than the Steam Deck is likely to get, but also means when the GPU does start to chug I can connect an eGPU to it’s dock.
To be clear, that doesn’t mean I don’t rate the Steam Deck - I really, really do - and it’s level of capability and price-point will act as a stabalising point for the wider industry, but I paid more for a better device and got my money’s worth.
Have you ever seen A Touch Of Cloth? It’s a superb send-up of police procedurals. There’s a scene where the main character, Cloth, is explaining some not-very-complex idea like you said and one of his lackeys replies, “Can you explain it like I’m some kind of viewer, guv?”.
“I’m gonna pop out and get some lunch because this is going to take a while and definitely isn’t just an SSH into an Ubuntu box running apt update/upgrade in a loop.”

Have you heard of our Lord and Saviour, Jellyfin?
It’s one of those annoying tropes common to a particular type of American TV show. Another annoying one is when someone says “I can explain” then doesn’t.
I’ll always be grateful for the firewalls like OpenWRT that will automatically revert any changes if you don’t log back in after a few minutes (at least on the web interface). I’m not proud of how many times that’s saved me.
The Denephew joke remains one of my all time favourites, and it was a footnote to a footnote.

Is this loss?
