10 days agoI have an f(x)tec Pro1X, and everything I read when I first got it told me to go with LineageOS instead of Ubuntu. I didn’t see any active development going on specifically for my phone with Ubuntu Touch when I checked.
The hardware is interesting but quirky. Mine has consistent issues with the wireless antenna cutting out and thus my call quality is pretty poor.
Wouldn’t really recommend it for the price, but it was the only one I wanted due to the physical keyboard. I won’t give it up and I suffer as a result.
I am using it in the US, and I suspect it’s a hardware issue.
I am indeed running LineageOS. I like it a lot and it’s a whole lot less creepy with no Google spyware garbage on it.
This is also my second example of this phone, but I should mention I bought both of them used from eBay because the $900 new price tag was just too much for me. The first example had a very strange issue where it would turn on, and then after about 10 seconds of use the touchscreen would stop working. it did this with both the stock Android ROM and LineageOS. Tech support for FxTec tried to be helpful and did eventually send me a replacement screen and screen cable, for free, so that was something. The screen didn’t fix it. I never ended up installing the cable due to getting distracted and just buying the second phone.
No clue if /e/OS has an image as I didn’t see it anywhere when I was searching.
The wireless issue really stinks because the keyboard, while it took some getting used to (coming from a Blackberry Key2), is really good and the best feature of the whole phone. Great to type on compared to any screen. Definitely worse than the Blackberry keyboards I loved because the keys are so much more far apart, and I have had a couple issues with shortcut keys not working, but worlds better than any slab phone. Lots of apps do get weird when you slide the keyboard open and that’s a software issue. Mostly due to the lack of slider phones nowadays.
Is it worth the new pricetag? Maybe for people who don’t bat an eye spending $900. For those of us who have bought vehicles less expensive than that…eh. The inconsistent reports and experiences with hardware might push me into something else like a keyboard case or a hacked peripheral keyboard from a Blackberry Q10 or something.
Gods do I wish my Key2 had an unlocked bootloader. I’d still be using it if I could put Lineage on it. Literally a perfect phone for what I wanted and it just can’t be useful anymore with Android 9 being too old to support the apps I use.
