Instant depreciation of a new car is worth it with the knowledge of newness with warranty. Buying used is a huge gamble. But yeah, I mostly agree that we need to encourage people like how I was encouraged: oh yeah just try it out!
Not everything needs to be on the same scale of safety. I’m not saying that this particular rule was 100% perfect, just that it’s not up to individuals to undermine them arbitrarily, and just because no one noticed in ten years does not mean that it was ok to do it.
I’m glad it’s not causing a lot of trouble anyway…
I’m willing to hear you out. Your evidence for the sign being “wrong” is that it wasn’t discovered? Do you think that city workers would check to make sure the sign still said 07:00 and not 07:30? Why in the world would they check things like this?
It’s nice to see a few folks pushing back. This whole thing has the narrative of the ol’ incompetent state with its endless red tape and arbitrary nonsense!
Sometimes those things are true and it can be a pain, but it’s the same reason we don’t go out for vigilante justice. It wasn’t arbitrarily installed and no one noticed it because there’s no reason to check things like that.
Oh? That’s awful! Totally agree that this should either default to invisible or make it easier for you to block.
Crazy to see this accurate comment downvoted even though it explains it perfectly. That’s the difference. Liberals are race reductionist right wing capitalists who are occasionally sympathetic to limited social democracy.
Although I would say that the inability to contact moderators and have a formal process of requests is significantly worse. I agree about the material sense of transparency.
It’s how some technical people are generally. It always kept me from spending time in tech spaces even though I was always interested. It’s no excuse to be autistic because plenty of autistic people don’t rip your head off for not understanding concepts.
Stack overflow is great for learning from posts that are marked as duplicate! I’ve learned the most from those lol

Fuck AI@lemmy.world•Firefox Will Ship with an “AI Kill Switch” to Completely Disable all AI Features
0·1 month agoOk I realize I’m in “fuck AI” but what exactly is the point of implementing this? LLMs are not intelligent and don’t work most of the time. Why is Mozilla pushing for this?
Best news I’ve heard all week!

Privacy@lemmy.ml•People with nothing to hide need not be bothered about surveillance, Supreme Court says
4·1 month agoBack in the late 90s when people started saying that to me, I’d just say ok, get naked RIGHT NOW. What, now you’ve got something to hide?
A few people took me seriously from that but it usually just fell short.
That’s why I’m objecting. Being fat isn’t a problem; it’s everything that can go along with it, like diabetes and so on. But being rich IS a problem. It’s kind of like saying “financial whiteness”.
It took me FOREVER to find, but I was determined to find my old games. I assumed they were Sega Master System games, so I started watching videos like “best master system games” and such.
Then when I finally came across them, the memories all came rushing back like it was the 80s again! It’s so frustrating but when you finally find it, it’s such a good feeling.
No capitalist can. It’s definitional to the system.
Financial obesity makes it seem like it’s the same as being fat, which doesn’t make sense because being fat is not a specific problem in the same way that being rich is.
I’m sure you just mean it like “fat cat” but it’s a bizarre way to phrase it since it isn’t a good analogy.

It sounds more like you think you are entitled to have access to a library to begin with. Why should one exist that you can exploit in a way that your business wants rather than one that respects freedom—this is where I completely agree with the software freedom folks.
If you work for a private business that is earning profit, I think it’s perfectly reasonable to expect to pay for a library or build it yourself. Why should something else just exist for your business to exploit?
