Preliminary data from the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) showed that about 726,000 people were employed in the sector in Germany in 2025, nearly 47,000 fewer than a year earlier and almost 107,000 fewer than in 2019.
Don’t worry, it’s just a temporary issue. German car brands will be back in business as soon as the demand for combustion engines picks up again! /s
German car brands are handling the transition relatively well. Volkswagen Group was 5th in global BEV sales in 2025 up from 7th in 2024. BMW was 7th last year. Germany is the second largest producer of BEVs in the world.
The estimates for job losses due to EVs in Germany were about 200k or so, if the transition is going okay. It currently looks pretty decent for Germany to be completely honest.
Yeah this. Reminds me of the slow but inevitable death of German coal (is it even dead now? it probably still writhes in some corner).
OTOH, considering where our “big brother” is going, you might be unironically right. Let’s hope not.
