  • Some arcades were actually a bit more manipulative than that in that they’d get harder depending on how long it was since you last put a quarter in.

Mortal Kombat was one. I noticed this pattern on the snes version of MK3 (can’t remember if it was ultimate or not that I had): I’d easily win one fight, then get demolished by the next fighter. Then continue and that same fighter would be easy, only for the next one after that to be much more difficult. I didn’t have to put quarters into my snes but they just used the same tuning from the arcade machines.

Eventually when I played that game, I was spending much more time on the space invaders minigame lol.

  • Depends on their financial position overall. If you live below your means and save up, especially in a professional position, you can offset expenses with passive investment income. Retirement is really just getting to the point where passive income and using up savings can last you until you expect to die.

If you have passive income that covers your bills, then the main difference between working and not working (or doing work without guaranteed income) is that you’re not getting ahead as quickly anymore. You’re not necessarily even falling behind, though even that state could be maintained for a while depending on how much you have saved and what kind of credit you have access to.

But yeah, if you’re living paycheck to paycheck, this isn’t an option, you’ll have to do the work around your other job.

  • Hell, forget motorbikes, even bicycles would make it hard to justify horse costs. And I bet they are superior for range and speed (average, at least, not so sure about max, and obviously it requires a rider in good enough shape, but I think you’ll get there if you ride regularly, assuming no disabilities).

  • From what I recall horses require: * Training on how to ride a horse

Picturing you riding a horse that is riding another horse. Extended range upgrade?

Though on a serious note, there’s also the horse itself and its training (to be ridden and not freak out about things, training it to ride another horse or series of horses optional).

  • Yeah, to serve as a counter example, I didn’t have sex until 24, it was alright, nothing amazing, but I felt good about it overall. Then that relationship fell apart because I had no idea how to relationship and ended up pretty needy and I didn’t have sex again until 3 years later. Then it was like the floodgates opened, had a casual relationship that I also wasn’t really ready for but learned a lot about myself during, and then fooled around with a swinger couple for a little while before ending up in my own open relationship and had a ton of fun with that.

Then, after that relationship ended, I had a bit of a manwhore phase, and from that, my guess is that these guys lowered their standards to get laid because those were the times when I’d walk away from a sexual experience not feeling great about it. The sex itself would be fine, but that post-nut clarity would hit hard and I’d just want to get away and be alone. Contrast that to when I was actually attracted to my partner, when I’d be happy to just spend more time with them, cuddling or going for another round, or even just existing in the same space as them.

  • It just wasn’t clear what the “this” in the comment I replied to was referring to, the OP or the comment it replied to. My own comment assumed it was saying thr comment it replied to had the double standard, but I see now that it might have been agreeing with that comment’s sentiment but saying the OP was about a double standard.

  • I’m not seeing the double standard there. Their overall stance sounds like they don’t gaf about anyone complaining about the sexuality of characters in video games because it’s often completely irrelevant to the game itself.

Or did I misunderstand and you mean that since they didn’t call out people complaining about a lack of gay representation they shouldn’t call out everyone complaining now that the complaints go both ways?

  • Hmm I think now they meant the original “switch to linux” bit sarcastically and are stuck in a mindset thinking that it’s way more complicated than windows and thus anyone claiming to have already switched must be lying…?

Though thinking about it more, it kinda feels like a bad faith response, posting about a vague windows solution that they want people to know exists but doesn’t want to share, while treating Linux as big and scary and requiring more effort than fighting against what your OS really wants you to do.

  • My approach was spending even more money for the pro version so I could access the OS settings paywalled by group policy and set it to never automatically download updates.

It would tell me about updates, but wouldn’t do shit until I clicked a button on the update page to actually install them (though without the option to pick and choose which ones).

It still nagged me about stupid shit I didn’t want, like edge, bing, one drive, and their office subscription.

So when I built a newer computer, I gave them $0 and installed Fedora and laugh at my former reluctance because it’s actually been easier and I haven’t even had moments where I wished I had just stuck with windows.

Not saying that it’s been perfect without any issues, I just recall that there were also issues on windows to deal with, a lot more dated responses showing up in searches that tell you do go to some setting window that no longer exists because the question was answered 6 months ago. Oh and I haven’t had to fight my fucking OS deciding to change my settings back to the shitty defaults they set (plus Linux just has better defaults, so doesn’t even need as much settings tweaking).

And as an added bonus, switching made me finally pull the plug on xbox game pass, which was a nice idea but I still mostly just spent my time playing games on steam and forgetting to check game pass when buying games on sale, so it was kinda a waste of money. But each time I considered getting rid of it before, I’d instead convince myself it was good to have and end up playing some games on there for a few days before forgetting about it again.

  • Man that reminds me a lot of the game, oh I forget the name of it, but it had some vowels in the name, where you go in thinking the point is to kick a lot of butts and towers but it turns out the real point of the game is getting your ass kicked and having your team yell at you.

Like this one time I was playing and wanted to try this annoying character that bugged the hell out of me when others played him. Can’t remember the name but he’d go like “ahhhhh” and then you’d be slow and couldn’t use abilities even if you ran away and the ground would do this explody thing. Doesn’t that sound soooo annoying? Anyways, I decided to try playing as this guy but I kept just dying instead of annoying the other team.

I see you want to say something but shut up for a bit, I’m not done yet.

So then I decided to try jungling. No, not juggling, I mean fighting the guys in the jungle. That way, I don’t keep giving gold and xp to the other team when I repeatedly die, except for a few times when I accidentally thought their base was the jungle.

Anyways, we should play some games after we have sex at the end of the date. If you brought a gaming laptop, at least. If not, you can watch me play or give me a bj while I play or something so it’s fun for you, too.

  • Back in the day, DRM was handled like this. I had an indy 500 game where the manual contained a bunch of hiatory of the sport and in order to launch the game, you had to answer indy 500 history trivia questions.

Other games had a symbol alphabet (or some other mapping between images and information it could put on the screen) where the key was only contained in the manual (or on a piece of paper that came with the game).

King’s Quest VI had riddles that needed to be answered in a symbol alphabet. You could play the game without doing this but you couldn’t beat it.

A mickey mouse game had a paper that was dark brown with black ink (so photocopiers would fail to copy it) with Mickey in various poses and you had to find the number for the one shown on screen to play.
