  • …this hits weird, 'cause I have a guy like this in my neighbourhood, but I know it’s not sports or vidya. Guy’s just on the thinnest of psychological threads. Which is a shame, he’s a pretty nice dude.

Coupled with your account being from lemmy.ca, I thought “Man I know who they’re talking about” before remembering Canada is really big and has about 41 million people in it.

  • This reminded me of something my dad told me when I was younger. It was mostly to justify saying that no, I did not need a TV in my room, but still kinda interesting:

In many cultures (definitely the ones my family grew out of), the fire served as a gathering spot. People would talk about stuff, share food and jokes, and relax together. It was a shared experience and source of comfort that helped strengthen interpersonal bonds.

His argument was that the family TV served a similar function (without the whole ‘also it’s the means for cooked food’ aspect, which shouldn’t be overlooked). It’s a point that made some sense to me at that stage of late 20th century mainstream society.

Hmm…the 21st century, defined as billions of little fires, and many of us cold. There’s a really pretentious poem here somewhere.

  • You can waste all sorts of time on the net arguing with people about who started what genres. Then you start getting into terms like proto-metal, etc.

No personal issue with your choice because it’s a fucking awesome song, but if wanted to be one of those assholes I’d say it’s heavy prog rock, in the pool of music metal would later draw from. That said, I’m no musicologist, and somewhere right now there’s someone in a black t-shirt with a very cool but difficult to read band name on it reading this, aghast.

I think we can all agree that Black Sabbath is a cornerstone in what metal generally (and specifically sludge, stoner metal, etc.) developed into.
