Turns out you don’t need religion to suffer from religious hysteria.
AI has not been invented yet. LLMs are not intelligent.
Correction: humans using AI will kill us, not AI itself.
This AI stuff really is just a tech sect
These people are so convinced of their superiority they’ve looped back around to pure idiocy. They’re so smart, they’ve created their own vengeful god. And if you don’t believe in it, you’ll get what’s coming to you. Just you wait til GPT-666 is released.
Always has been.
Silicon Valley’s New Religion: Peter Thiel’s Tech Apocalypse - https://www.thenerdreich.com/peter-thiel-religion-apocalypse-dreams/
It is so weird that American techbros have generated their own little universe of heroes and villains that all fight each other but are clearly written by the same guy so they all ultimately support the same set of values and worldviews that clearly make no sense outside the one guys’ mind.
Gotta say, Silicon Valley’s writer is a complete hack and these effective altruism idiots aren’t worth the ink any more than their supervillain counterparts are. The whole simplistic extrapolation to infinity nonsense is exhausting and pointless.
AI is digital. It is a set of instructions that can be written on paper. Biological brains are analog, by contrast, and there is currently no reason to think that digital computation can produce subjectivity.
That’s good and bad.
It’s good, because our approach to artificial intelligence (putting a lot of processing power into a Rube Goldberg machine) cannot “come alive.” Such a machine is like a calculator, unmotivated and inert.
That’s bad, because it will ALWAYS do what people tell it to do, the way a printer will print whatever you tell it to print. Such an intelligence will never develop normative understanding (or morality), never know that it is alive, because it is an inanimate process.
Economically, we are already fucked. I’m not afraid of zombie AI’s that will displace workers, because we are already in the thrall of that exact economic apocalypse.
Zombie processes single-mindedly pursuing a self-destructive goal (e.g., a profit motive) already exist: corporations. Multinational corporate entities used to serve diverse stakeholders with competing interests, but today that is no longer the case. Tech giants want to make money. If doing so means ending democracy or killing children, then that is what these tech giants will do. There is no inherent check on their power, only external regulations. A corporation is a kind of self-reinforcing process: anyone on the board of directors at Apple undermining the profit motive gets replaced, etc.
Anyways, what we need is systemic change. And the sort of political and philosophical re-alignment that protects humanity against the overreach of corporations will also protect us against general AI zombies. Because whether AGI comes to fruition or not, human interests are already secondary to the undermining forces of corporate venality and corruption across the board.
if the ai experts think ai is gonna kill us. they are not experts they are delusional.
the only way it’ll get us, is from using up our water and adding to climate change.
Bullshit
Climate change will kill us most likely.
We will probably be the last generation that lived lives of relative peace.
If we don’t stop all emissions as well as retroactively remove all the emissions we put in the system then it will eventually kill us. This is going to keep spiraling out of control until the oceans acidify, followed by the death of almost all large animal life.
im not saving for retirement because im a broke tranny and i can’t be sure i won’t be disappeared
Were they researching sci-fi?
I am so much more worried about climate change or nuclear war being the killers. I presume AI experts are probably going through the same psychosis and such that anyone else who regularly uses it is going through.
To be fair I do think the current way AI is being run with massive data centers is making the climate catastrophe worse but that’s little different.
How big is the intersection between “AI Experts” and rich assholes? My guess is that it is large.
